don't think we should ever allow religion the trick of maintaining that the spiritual and the beautiful and the noble and the altruistic and the morally strong and the virtuous are in any way inventions of religion or particular or peculiar to religion. It's certainly true that you could say the Christ who said "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone" - that's a wonderful to have said. But there is no, absolutely no monopoly on beauty and truth in religion, and I suppose one of the reasons that I'm so fond of the Greeks, and one of the reasons that the great radical and poet Shelley wrote his Prometheus Unbound was that he understood that if you were to compare the Genesis myth, which has, which had bedeviled our culture, the Western European culture for a very long time indeed, for two thousand years, it was essentially a myth in which we should be ashamed of ourselves. God says: who told you you were naked? What possible reason have we to believe that we are naked or that if we are naked there is something to be ashamed of, that what we are and what we do is something for which we should ever apologise, we should apologise for our dreams, our impulses, our appetites, our drives, our desires, are not things to apologise for. Our actions sometimes we do apologise for and we excoriate ourselves for and rightly, but that's the Genesis myth. The Greek myth of Prometheus, who stole fire from heaven and who gave to his favourite - his favourite mortal: man. In other words what the Greeks were saying is that we have divine fire, whatever is divine is in us, as humans. We are as good as the gods. The gods are capricious and mean and foolish and stupid and jealous and rapine and all the things that Greek mythology show us that they are, and that's a much better it seems to me - and for that the gods punished Prometheus and chained him to the Caucasus and vultures chewed away at his liver everyday as it regrew because he was immortal of course, and Shelley quite rightly understood - and interestingly his wife of course wrote Frankenstein as the modern Prometheus - understood that that mythological idea, that champion of a real humanity and a real humanism, as we've come to call it, is we are captains of our soul and masters of our destiny, and that we contain any divine fire that there is, divine fire that is fine and great. I mean it's perfectly obvious that if there were ever a God he has lost all possible taste. You've only got to look - forget the aggression and unpleasantness of the radical right or the Islamic hordes to the East - the sheer lack of intelligence and insight and ability to express themselves and to enthuse others of the priesthood and the clerisy here, in this country, and indeed in Europe, you know God once had Bach and Michelangelo on his side, he had Mozart, and now who does he have? People with ginger whiskers and tinted spectacles who reduce the glories of theology to a kind of sharing, you know? That's what religion has become, a feeble and anaemic nonsense, because we understood that the fire was within us, it was not in some idol on an altar, whether it was a gold cross or whether it was a Buddha or anything else, that we have it. The fault is in our stars, but also the glory is (correcting himself) in us not in our stars. The glory - anything - we take credit for what is great about man and we take blame for what is dreadful about man, we neither grovel or apologise at the feet of a god, or are so infantile as to project the idea that we once had a father as human beings and we therefore should have a divine one too. We have to grow up, which is partly what Christopher was saying.

New Moon (spoilers)

I wrote this for a bunch of Twilight fans on thestudentroom.co.uk .Its not modified much.

It was great! I loved it. Just a few points:
OMG Taylor Lautner's abs! Seriously they are crazy!
Kristen still annoyed me. That whole breaking up her sentances thing, and breathing heavily, its so unnatural and awkward.
I hate Robert Pattinson all made up, it looks freaky and makes him not look hot. His acting was not up to the old standard.
Fight scene with the volturi-Awesome
Alice's vision of Bella as a vampire I didn't like, wtf is up with the cheesy running?!!
I didn't like the ending much, it was way too sudden. The audience needs some downtime after all that drama. I also thought the plane jouney and the panic of trying to get to Edward should have been played up more, its so dramatic in the book
I loved the scenes with Kristen and Taylor, both when they're having fun and when they're "breaking up"
The deciding about Bellas transformation should have been alot more dramatic and tense as well, in the book Edward is furious with her and it would have worked better around the table as in the book.
Loved the wolves, though its still dissapointing how ugly the guy who plays Sam Uley is. The Volturi were all awesome, and I loved how most of the British actors kept their accents. Some of the Volturi guys are so hot.
I liked the general adherance to the book.
Overall, it was awesome :D there is stuff I would have elaborated on but obviously you can't have a film that long (even though you know that Twilighters would sit through it :p)

I suppose I should write about the gig. I'll put the highlights here (i've talked about it enough)
1. the stage set was amazing! the crowd were broken into three, which really helped with the shoving. The stage was circular, with three towers that went up and down :D and two "wings" off each side. I was on Matt's side for the first time.
2. The introduction was cool. They had big brotheresque people projected walking up these tower blocks. Near the end the people started falling down.
3. Helskinki Jam is mindblowing. Chris and Dom playing their fastest whilst rotating :D
4. Talking to a girl called Hannah in the crowd. She went to her guitar shop in Devon and because she was a Muse fan they let her play on Matts guitar they had just finished and were going to ship out to him!!! I also met Din from the TSR Muse soc
5. MK Ultra!!!!!
6. Matt's awesome light up glasses that he chucked into the crowd
7. Lazers! so many lazers! Matt even used his CD thing on his mic stand to aim them at us
8. Ending, got a tour programme and a t-shirt. Ran to the train station and pyro missed her train so came back home with me

Hello everyone. Not used this blog in a while. Am back in the UK now. Third year is suiting me.
1.I deleted all the poltical blogs. Some were naieve, some were boring and all of them were a bit pretentious. So, I got rid of them.

Watchmen (spoilers)

So, I went to see this film with Lucie yesterday having heard good things. I was happy it was on in English as I was dying to see it.
Well! it was pretty cool. The effects were amazing, fight scenes pretty cool, costumes awesome and the characters were great!
Psyco mask guy reminded me alot of the joker. The comedian was messed up but was still kinda cool in a arsehole kinda way. Night owl guy was so sweet. He deserved the girl. She was gorgeous, probably the only person who could look ok in stuff that tight. Her mum's costume was pretty cool as well. Love the 40s hair, the stockings and the corset. Dr Manhattan is pretty cool, other than the random blue penis every now and again. Really distracting!haha.
The story was really great too! Developed, interesting plot and all sorts of different emotions played on. Some parts were so gory I couldn't look.
In the end the plot was confusing, not quite clear enough. Both me and Lucie didn't really understand. I read the wiki for the comic today and it makes a bit more sense now.
Overall really worth seeing. I'm going to get it on DVD when it comes out. I think thats all I have to say. I might edit this if i've missed anything crucial.

Italian streets

So, as most people know by now, i'm in Italy. Here in Italy they don't really have a benefits system. This means there are lots of poor people who have no back up on money and hence means that theres alot of beggars. In all the cities i've been in in the UK I've never met more than one beggar per time i'm in the city centre. Here everytime I go out my door to get to university I pass at least three.
Sometimes these are people sitting down with a cup, which is what i'm used to. More often here its people trying to sell you something. They sell flowers, socks, tissues.. anything to make a quick bit of money. I don't mind this, everyone has to find their own way, and i'm sad that the Italian government doesn't try and help them.
This isn't all though. Sometimes they don't have anything to sell, they just come up and ask for money. I find this annoying, but I don't blame them. What I don't like is when you refuse them more than once and they keep following you and talking to you. Sometimes they don't take no for an answer, and there are a bunch of this kind of people.
Lastly, and thankfully alot more rare, is a differnt type. Quite a few of them touch you. This I find a complete voliation of personal space and it makes me very uncomfortable. Normally you can carry on walking and they drop it. Not every time. For the second time ever today I had someone cling to me. The first time was this big black guy who grabbed my arm and kept it even after I tried to stuggle. I got very scared and told him in a raised (and no doubt paniced) voice that I had a lecure and he let me go. It shocked me.
Today I had something similar. This time it was a woman who grabbed my coat on my arm and clung pathetically and whined at me. I told her to her face that I was scared but she carried on. She went closer to me and she was right up against my bag. She moved back and I thought I saw her hand moving as if to hide something. I said "what did you do?" in a shocked voice and checked my bag. I honestly believed she had taken something, but I was wrong. At this point she obviously realised she'd pushed me too far for money and moved back and I left.
I can understand that in Italy people are more open with touching, but from strangers surely thats not normal. I find it so so creepy

Moaning blog. Sorry

So, I just went to Paramore's myspace to listen to Decode. After that it had a bunch of songs that I have on my Riot album and I realised how much I miss being able to listen to CDs easily. When i'm here I only listen to the stuff on my itunes and it gets so samey. Granted I didn't listen to it much when I had them all in Leicester house last year, but I love my CDs. Theres so much of them that I don't have on my ipod. The sameyness is really beginning to grate and I don't listen to the ipod properly anymore, its just background (unless its Muse or JM). I need my CDs and I want a stable home or flat rather than always moving and never having all of my stuff in one place. It makes life so complicated.
Secondly for the past two years i've been shopping and cooking food entirely for myself. This has caused the standard of my diet to go down. Its difficult to care too much when it just you. Its also easy to overestimate portions (which is what I think i'm doing). I don't see whats so hard about communal cooking. Everyone gets to cook less often and the ingredients come in the right sizes, rather than having to cook over and keep some and ect and ect.
Also, although its fine here, I have no close friends. I like people dearly enough but theres noone here I feel I like as much as my viking mates back in Leicester. I miss them loads, no one here makes crude jokes or laughs or anything. They've lovely but its not the same. I also find it quite tough even when talking in English with Lucie, its the way that you have to think about everything you so to make sure that they understand it and as a conseqence its never "easy" and chat never "flows". Weird that.
Lastly but not leasty I have to think about next year and where i'm living. I'd love to live with Liz and Potter. Lydia was talking about her plans yesterday and it made me realise that the worries that i'd had are achieveable to get over. I've sent Potter a message. If not i'll go into halls. I wouldn't hate that, and it would be more comfortable than a house maybe. I think i'm somewhat "once bitten twice shy" about my old house. It was dark and cold and damp and horrible! We were so stupid. A few of my housemates didn't help though. I'm sure if I was with Potter and Liz it would be a good warm sensible house, and i'm trying not to let past experiences get to me.

Procastination and Twilight

Yes, I should be revising, but i'm hoping writing this will get me into doing some work. Yeh... ;)
So i'm gunna write about twilight. 4 books, writen by Stephenie Mayer, that are massive in America and pretty massive in the UK too. I'm asuming most of you at least know what they're about, so i'm gunna skip that.
I love the books, despite many things that I don't like. Its very strange. I could write an equal amount here about why I love them and what I don't like.
Shall we take the don't likes first? OK
Bella, as a character, is slightly weak. Shes has enough personality to have a story, but its in no way as developed as the others. Also, sometimes her constant going on about how shes not good enough for Edward gets annoying. Get some confidence girl, although it fits well to the plot. The amount of description of Edward in the first book in particular is over blown to the point of nausea. Its over done, and would have worked better without so much emphasis. This is compared to having read Midnight Sun (same book, Edwards perspective) where he has alot more complex character but puts the same point across. That said, she wrote Midnight Sun after Twilight and its highly possible that her writing improved.
Breaking Dawn's plot is also weird. The whole preganancy thing and the imprinting thing were just a bit insane. It makes for a good story, but its just really weird. In particular the last part of Breaking Dawn feels like a tag on plot device rather than a nessesity. In general you don't get scared about whats going to happen.
Personally, I don't like the whole warewolf and the character of Jacob thing. I mean, it works in the story but its just not interesting enough for me.
She uses dreams too much in her books, and mostly they're kinda just meaningless deviations from the point.

Good parts:
Firstly, the concept is a really good one for a story. Human girl falls in love with vampires whos after her blood. It sounds good in just one sentance.
Secondly I love Edward. Its just a girly, men in books thing. Hes so much better than any real men. He really cares and is sincere about his emotions, even if he is stupidly overprotective. Also, i'm in love with Robert Pattinson, like properly!
I love the emotions in the books. From the intense love they both have, to the absolute pain in New Moon they're written really well. She doesn't do very well on the scared emotion though, but hey, thats nothing.
I like the kind of slight eroticness of the books. Its not even explicit, but even when they're kissing theres this build up of massive sexual tension that I find interesting, cuz i'm weird like that hhaa. I find that part quite real. Tension is good.
I like the smaller characters in the book. I think Charlie is cool, and I love all the Cullens and their different personalties. I think the personalities of the warewolves are OK too. The characters arn't static, and they change, as well as more information coming out about them as you read. I like that.
Opinions anyone? :D The loves have alot more weight than the hate, and thats why I like them. A second reading has make me look at them all in a more objective way. The first time you read them is so intense that you kinda forget to concentrate on anything.
